History of Michigan Rural EMS Network (MiREMS)

MiREMS is a not-for-profit organization which exists to support EMS agencies and EMS professionals that provide prehospital care in the rural areas of Michigan.  MiREMS began as the Huron-Sanilac EMS Network, which represents EMS services and providers that deliver prehospital care to rural Huron and Sanilac Counties.  The Network, which became incorporated as a Michigan non-profit organization, was created as a response to the many challenges that EMS professionals face in our rural areas.  The Network, as well as the Network Director position, have been funded primarily through a grant from the US Department of Health and Human Services Office of rural Health Policy.  The Network also relies on membership dues and fundraising for sustainability.

One goal of the original Network was to increase the number of EMS professionals in Huron and Sanilac Counties, with an increase in advance certifications.  Strategies have included increasing access to EMS training, reducing barriers to EMS training and service, and increasing public awareness of the value and importance of EMS.  Since the fall of 2007, the Network, in cooperation with Sanilac Medical Services, has been instrumental in planning and promoting several initial education courses.  For these courses, the Network was pleased to provide 33 partial scholarships to deserving individuals, and textbooks to all EMT and Paramedic students from Huron and Sanilac Counties. The Network has also assisted in the arrangement of several specialty classes such as Michigan Agricutural Accident Rescue System and Farmedic. These programs were offered as a result of feedback from EMS professionals in the two counties, and provide responders with a systematic approach to farm rescue procedures that address the safety of the patient as well as the responder.

The Michigan Rural EMS Network will continue their efforts in the Thumb of Michigan through its First on Scene outreach program.  This program was implemented to ensure that anyone who is "first on scene" in an emergency has the knowledge and tools available to provide life sustaining care until EMS arrives.  The Michigan Rural EMS Network has also implemented a campaign to increase public knowledge and support of EMS in Huron and Sanilac Counties. The objectives of this plan are to educate the public about the role of EMS and EMS professionals and its rewards; to increase awareness of the education, commitment, sacrifice and experience of EMS professionals; and to help the public understand their role in emergency preparedness.

Based on successes achieved in Huron and Sanilac Counties, Network received a 3 year, $552,000 Network Development grant through the US Department of Health and Human Services Office of Rural Health Policy.  This grant allows for the expansion of the original Huron-Sanilac EMS Network to a statewide Michigan Rural EMS Network.  The goals of MiREMS are to:

                              1.  Improve the healthcare environment and level of support for rural EMS professionals and the companies for which they work

                              2.  Provide opportunities, events, resources and technical assistance that expand and enhance the effectiveness of rural EMS professionals and the companies for which they work

The Network is accepting applications from individuals and organizations which have an interest in the delivery of quality prehospital care in rural Michigan.  Applications can be found by clicking the Membership tab above.  If you would like more information about the Michigan Rural EMS Network please contact Leslie Hall, Executive Director, by clicking the "Contact" tab at the top of the page or by calling (989) 284-5345.
